Balance Protection insurance

If you're like many people, you use your TD Credit Card to make major purchases — and small ones too!  TD Balance Protection Plus and TD Balance Protection Insurance are two optional products designed to help you deal with your TD Credit Card(s) payment obligations in the event of a covered Involuntary Unemployment, Loss of Self-Employment Income, Total Disability, Loss of Life, Dismemberment or Critical Illness. 


Two optional plans for financial security

TD Balance Protection Plus
For a monthly charge of $1.20 per $100 of your average daily balance, you can enroll in TD Balance Protection Plus.  You will enjoy the security of knowing that your TD Credit Card Account balance can be paid, up to a maximum of one lump sum payment of $25,000, in the event you or your spouse die, suffer a covered dismemberment or are diagnosed with a covered critical illness – or are even hospitalized for more than 30 consecutive days.  This insurance can also provide monthly payments of at least 10% of your eligible outstanding balance to your TD Credit Card Account if you experience a period of involuntary unemployment, even if you are self-employed, or if either you or your spouse is hospitalized for at least 24 hours or become totally disabled.  These monthly benefit payments, up to a maximum of $25, 000, will apply if you meet the eligibility requirements as defined in the Certificate of Insurance. 

TD Balance Protection Insurance
For a monthly charge of $0.99 per $100 of your average daily balance, you can enroll in TD Balance Protection Insurance. This coverage includes all the benefits of TD Balance Protection Plus, except for disability requiring hospitalization and spousal coverage. In addition, the percentage used to calculate the monthly benefit is 5%.


Available Coverages

Loss of Self-Employment Income Coverage
This coverage pays a monthly benefit to your TD Credit Card Account if you are self-employed and are forced to close your business for financial reasons. In addition, you would also have been self-employed 25 hours or more per week for an active business that had been registered or incorporated for a period of at least 36 consecutive months immediately prior to the date of the forced closure of your business for financial reasons, and remain unemployed for more than 90 consecutive days.

Involuntary Unemployment Coverage
This coverage pays a monthly benefit to your TD Credit Card Account if you are involuntarily unemployed or are temporarily unemployed due to labour disputes, strikes or lockouts and remain unemployed for more than 30 consecutive days.

Total Disability Coverage
This coverage pays a monthly benefit to your TD Credit Card Account if you become totally disabled, as defined in the Certificate of Insurance, and the disability lasts for more than 30 consecutive days.  

Life and Dismemberment Coverage
These coverages provides a one-time benefit payment to your TD Credit Card Account should you die or suffer a covered dismemberment.

Accidental Death At 66 Coverage
When you turn 66, Life coverage will be replaced with Accidental Death At 66.  Your monthly premium reduces to $0.59 per $100 of your average daily balance, plus applicable taxes. This coverage provides a one-time benefit payment to your TD Credit Card Account should you experience an accidental death.

Critical Illness Coverage
Critical Illness includes Acute Heart Attack, Cancer (Life-Threatening), or Stroke, as defined in the Certificate of Insurance. This coverage provides a one-time benefit payment to your TD Card Account if you are diagnosed with a covered critical illness.

Disability Requiring Hospitalization Coverage
This coverage can pay a monthly benefit payment to your TD Credit Card Account, if you or your spouse is hospitalized for more than 24 hours due to injury or sickness. This coverage can also provide a one-time benefit payment to your TD Credit Card Account, if you are hospitalized for more than 30 consecutive days.  

Spousal Coverage
This coverage for your spouse includes all the benefits offered to you as the Primary Cardholder, except involuntary unemployment coverage and loss of self – employment income coverage. Your spouse does not have to be a cardholder, authorized user or even a TD Canada Trust customer to be covered. The definition of a spouse is the person who is lawfully married to you, or the person who has been living with you for at least one year and is publicly represented as your spouse.
